Smart forms – first name, lastname

When building a form, it is advisable to make the form as short as possible, by reducing the number of questions asked in an attempt to reduce the number of dropouts. Recently when filling in a form I came across an example where only one form field was used to ask me my full name. In an attempt to speed through the form I entered only my first name.

Smart

I’m guessing that because i didn’t have a space in my name, the website was coded to give me an error message as that was an indication that I had only entered one name. It was the first time I’d seen this used online, and it was pretty smart….

It would’ve been great if the field label was outside of the input field, so that I could keep a track of what I had filled in.
